Ventures Scholars Program

Recognition as Ventures Scholar is an award based on academic achievement. This honor serves to encourage and support high achieving, underrepresented students interested in medicine and the allied health professions, engineering, math, science, and technology – based careers, provide them with information about these career areas, and link them with member colleges and universities nationwide. There is no monetary award associated with participation.

Selection Process

In order to qualify as a Ventures Scholar, a student must meet the following criteria:

  1. be in the 10th or 11th grade;
  2. score 100 or better on the PSAT (minimum 50 math/50 verbal);
  3. maintain at least a 3.0 Grade Point Average;
  4. identify themselves as a member of an underrepresented group (American Indian or Alaskan Native, African American or Black, Mexican or Mexican American, and Latin American, South American, Central American or other Hispanic or Latino); and
  5. express an interest in medicine and the allied health professions, math, science, engineering or technology – based majors or are undecided about their academic major choice.

Background of the Ventures Scholars Program

On January 1, 1999, the Ventures Scholars Program was established as part of Ventures In Education, Inc., a not-for-profit organization. The mission of the Ventures Scholars Program is to identify high achieving high school and college students from historically underrepresented groups and provide them with recognition and information that will increase their chances of entering careers in medicine and the allied health professions, engineering, math, science and technology. This is accomplished by partnering with a consortium of undergraduate and professional institutions nationwide and providing opportunities for these institutions to recruit, enroll, and prepare targeted students for these professions.

The Ventures Scholars Program hopes that high schools will continue to encourage high achieving, historically underrepresented students interested in medicine and the allied health professions, science, engineering and mathematics to take the PSAT so they will be eligible to participate in the Ventures Scholars Program.

If you have any questions about the Ventures Scholars Program, please contact 1-800-94-SMART, extension 103 or 212-696-5717, extension 103.
